At the age of 6 or 7 all boys and girls go to school .

As a result, 45 of the 50 states raised high- school graduation requirements. One government study recommended a longer school year. (Now, the average American student attends school about 180 days a year, compared to 210 for a Japanese student).

At the age of 16 about two-thirds of these pupils leave school and get job or apprenticeships. About one-third stays on at school until the age of 18, preparing themselves for higher education.

State schools are almost all day schools , holding classes between Mondays and Fridays. The school year normally begins in early September and continues into the following July.

Parental involvement through the PTA and other links between parents and schools is growing . The PTA forms both a special focus for parents and much valued additional resources for the school .

I spend much time at school . But at school we do not only study. We have some extracurricular activities as well. They are part of school life.

At the end of their time at school , most students get a high school diploma. If they want to ^o on to college, they take college admission tests. In Britain all children from five to sixteen go to school .
